The brain is located inside our skull, protected by it and being enclosed by three membranes named meninges. The human brain consists of three parts:
- The cerebrum – this part contains the thinking parts of the brain, which includes emotions, memory, personality, control of movement and high level skills.
- The brain stem – this links the brain to the spinal cord. It also controls basic body functions such as breathing, swallowing, heart rate, blood pressure, consciousness, and whether one is awake or sleepy.
- The cerebellum – this part controls physical coordination and balance.
